Keeping up with the latest technology sometimes means keeping up with your clients – not just your competition. Case in point, Solid Earth Civil Constructors was given an ultimatum from a large potential client to purchase, adopt and use computer-based technology for digital estimation and bid submission. Even though Solid Earth Lead Estimator and Field Superintendent Don Peters had more than two decades of experience in traditional, paper-based takeoffs using a digitizer scale and straight ruler, the client refused to accept paper bids. Without a dedicated IT staff, the firm needed to adopt the technology necessary to work with the client in question, as well as to complete accurate and timely bids to remain competitive in the marketplace.
Per the recommendation of the potential clients, Solid Earth Civil Constructors chose Bluebeam® Revu® to help the firm digitize the previously paper-based workflows for takeoffs and bid submission and establish real-time mobile collaboration between the office and the field.
Solid Earth pulled in one Field Superintendent who had some computer background to learn how to use Bluebeam Revu for takeoffs. Without ever even having done a takeoff, a comparison between his digital takeoff submission in Revu and the veteran’s paper-based estimation yielded a $50,000 error. Keep in mind this was the first task Solid Earth ever bid using Revu.
"We've been able to immensely change the way the estimating goes for the company and have been able to produce so much more work for ourselves that we actually have to pick and choose what jobs we really want." Drake Carter, Project Manager/Estimator, Solid Earth Civil Constructors
Since the adoption of Bluebeam Revu for digital estimation, the firm’s bid submission capabilities have more than tripled, with more jobs bid in the first quarter of 2018 than in all of 2017. In addition, the mobile capabilities found in Bluebeam Studio help to maximize profitability margins by allowing real-time collaboration with field staff, which minimizes time spent in the office coordinating data—key for an SMB labor force. Modernizing project workflows with Revu increases trust, communication and opportunities for Solid Earth from clients like Trammell Crow, Kiewit, Bechtel and the US government, solidifying Solid Earth’s designation as Equipment World’s 2018 Contractor of the Year.
